How to build a custom habit, step by step

  1. Name your habit

Give it a small, specific name like “Drink a glass of water after waking up”, pick an emoji icon, and add why it matters to you.

  2. Choose a habit type

Pick how the app tracks it: yes or no, a count with a unit (8 glasses), a timer in minutes (10 minutes), or a checklist of steps for a routine.

  3. Set the goal and priority

Choose whether you are building a good habit or breaking a bad one, set the difficulty and priority, and pick a colour.

  4. Add reminders

Add one or more reminder times, ideally when you usually do the habit or right after something you already do.

  5. Add to Habigrow

Tap the button to open the habit in the Habigrow app with everything filled in. Without the app, you go to Google Play or the App Store first.

Custom habit FAQ

How do I create a custom habit?

Name the habit, choose one of the four habit types (yes or no, count, timer or checklist), set the goal, add reminder times, and tap Add to Habigrow. The habit opens in the app with everything filled in.

What are the four types of habits in Habigrow?

Yes or no for habits that are simply done or not, count for habits with a daily number like 8 glasses of water, timer for habits measured in minutes like meditation, and checklist for routines with several steps.

Can I build a habit to break a bad habit?

Yes. Set the goal to “Break a bad habit” and use a yes-or-no habit such as “No phone in bed” or “No sugary drinks”, ticked off each day you stick to it.

Are timer and checklist habits free?

The free plan includes up to 3 yes-or-no or count habits. Timer and checklist habits are part of Habigrow Premium, along with unlimited habits, Google Drive backup and full insights, and Premium removes ads.

Do I need an account?

No. The habit is saved in the Habigrow app on your phone. An account is optional.

Can I share a custom habit with a friend?

Yes. Building a habit creates a link; anyone who opens it on their phone can add the same habit to their own Habigrow app.

How many reminders can a habit have?

As many as you need. Most habits work best with one reminder at the time you usually do them, or right after something you already do every day.
